Convert an HSBC UK statement to Excel
HSBC UK separates statements (PDF) from the transaction list (downloadable as CSV or Excel). They do not always line up.

Two sources of data
In online banking, selecting an account and using search and filter on the transaction list lets you download a file in a chosen format. Statements are separate: pick the statement type, year and month and download the PDF. Several years of statements are kept online.
Why they do not match
The transaction list is live activity for any date range you choose, so it will not align with statement periods and has no statement balances. For reconciling to a statement, use the PDF.
Layout notes
HSBC statements typically print Paid out, Paid in and Balance columns, and the balance may only appear once a day. RowBalance reads the columns, joins wrapped descriptions and checks the totals against the statement.
How to do it
- Download the HSBC PDF statements you need.
- Drop them above and check the balance badges.
- Export Excel or CSV, or OFX, QBO and Xero CSV on a paid plan.
Excel and CSV are free for up to 5 pages a day. QuickBooks, Xero and OFX files and batch conversion are on paid plans, from a $9 one-off pass: see pricing or go back to the converter.
Questions
Which should I use for the accountant, the CSV or the PDF?
The PDF statement is the official record and has the balances. The CSV is convenient for recent activity.
Is RowBalance affiliated with HSBC?
No. HSBC is a trademark of HSBC Holdings, used only to describe compatibility.
