Turn a bank CSV export into an OFX file that accounting and personal finance apps can import as a bank statement.

What OFX gives you over CSV
A CSV import needs a column mapping and has no concept of a unique transaction. OFX carries a date, signed amount, description and a unique ID (FITID) for each transaction, plus the account and the ledger balance. Apps use the ID to skip transactions they already hold, so importing an overlapping file does not create duplicates.
What RowBalance writes
OFX 1.0.2, the SGML flavour that Xero, Sage, FreeAgent, Quicken, Moneydance and most bank-feed importers accept, with a bank or credit card statement aggregate and CREDIT or DEBIT types. IDs are derived from the date, amount and description, so exporting the same data twice produces the same IDs.
CSV layouts it understands
Preamble lines before the header, comma, semicolon or tab delimiters, separate debit and credit columns, DR/CR type columns, US or UK dates and 1.234,56 amounts. When the CSV has a running balance column, every row is checked against it.
How to do it
- Drop your CSV above.
- Check the detected columns and the balance badge.
- Choose OFX and download (paid plans, from a $9 one-off pass).
- In your accounting app, import the OFX as a bank statement.
Excel and CSV are free for up to 5 pages a day. QuickBooks, Xero and OFX files and batch conversion are on paid plans, from a $9 one-off pass: see pricing or go back to the converter.
Questions
Is CSV to OFX free?
Reading the CSV and exporting Excel or CSV is free for up to 5 pages a day. OFX, QBO and Xero CSV exports are on paid plans, starting with a $9 one-off pass.
Does it work for credit card CSVs?
Yes. Credit card statements export as credit card accounts with charges negative and payments positive. If your CSV has charges as positive numbers, check the signs in the editor before export.
Should I use OFX or QBO?
Use OFX for Xero, Sage, Quicken and most other apps. Use QBO for QuickBooks, which expects the Intuit sign-on block.
