Convert MT940 statements to CSV or Excel

MT940 is the SWIFT statement format used by banks across Europe and beyond. Read it as a spreadsheet, or convert it to QuickBooks and OFX.

What is in an MT940 file?

Each statement has a reference (:20:), the account (:25:), an opening balance (:60F:), statement lines (:61:) with value date, debit/credit mark and amount, free-text details (:86:) and a closing balance (:62F:). RowBalance reads all of them, including several statements per file and reversals (RC/RD).

Readable descriptions

Structured :86: fields used by German (?20 to ?29, ?32) and Dutch (/NAME/, /REMI/) banks are decoded into the counterparty and payment reference, so the CSV is readable.

How to do it

  1. Drop an MT940 file above.
  2. Check that opening + transactions = closing for each statement.
  3. Download CSV, Excel, QBO or OFX.

Excel and CSV are free for up to 5 pages a day. QuickBooks, Xero and OFX files and batch conversion are on paid plans, from a $9 one-off pass: see pricing or go back to the converter.

Questions

Is MT940 being replaced by camt.053?

Many banks now offer ISO 20022 camt.053 alongside or instead of MT940. RowBalance converts both.
