Convert a Capital One statement to Excel

Capital One mixes bank and credit card accounts. Both come as PDF statements that RowBalance can turn into a checked spreadsheet.

Download options

Online account activity can be downloaded as a file (CSV, with Quicken or OFX-type options on some accounts) for a recent date range, and monthly PDF statements sit under Statements. Capital One mostly issues paperless statements, so the PDFs are the way to reach older months. Formats and limits depend on the account type.

Credit card statements

On a credit card statement, purchases are shown as positive charges and payments and credits as negative or in a Payments, Credits and Adjustments section. In an accounting file they need the opposite sign. RowBalance detects credit card statements and exports charges as negative and payments as positive, so the balance reconciles against the new balance.

Bank accounts

Bank statements list transactions with date, description and amount, grouped by deposits and withdrawals. Totals at the top are checked against the sum of the rows.

How to do it

  1. Download the statement PDFs from your Capital One account.
  2. Drop them above and check the balance badges.
  3. Export Excel or CSV, or QBO and OFX on a paid plan.

Excel and CSV are free for up to 5 pages a day. QuickBooks, Xero and OFX files and batch conversion are on paid plans, from a $9 one-off pass: see pricing or go back to the converter.

Questions

Why are my credit card amounts the wrong way round?

Cards report what you owe, so charges are positive. Accounting software wants charges as money out. RowBalance flips them on export.

Does the statement leave my computer?

No.

Is RowBalance affiliated with Capital One?

No. Capital One is a trademark of Capital One, used only to describe compatibility.
